Chapter 5

„Bottle of mine, it`s you I`ve always wanted”

1

The Big Dream
(Anderson / Howe / Wakeman / Bruford)
So giving all the love you have
5Never be afraid to show your heart
So giving all the love you have
There is a special reason
A special reason…
2
In the big dream
We are heroes
We are dreamers
Of the big dream
3
Someone told me
There are brothers
Live forever
In the big sky
4
Just hear your voice
Sing all the songs of the earth
Nothing can come between us
You’re a brother of mine
5
Sing out your sisters
All the dreams of the world
Nothing can come between us
We are the travellers of time
6
See the desert
We have walked the path
Of all the known religions
7
In the big dream
We are brothers, we are sisters
Of the big dream
8
Just hear your voice
Sing all the songs of the earth
Nothing can come between us
You’re a brother of mine
9
Sing out your sisters
All the dreams of the world
Nothing can come

between us
10

Took me by surprise
It opened up my eyes
I can’t believe we’re ready to
Run another
Run another
Run another
11
Fourth Dimension Dream
All the way it seems
I can’t believe we’re running to
See the world for what it really is
In the full moon
12
ii Nothing Can Come Between Us
(Anderson / Howe / Wakeman / Bruford)
Took me by surprise
It opened up my eyes
I can’t believe we’re ready to
Run another
Run another
Run another
13
Fourth Dimension Dream
Always the way it seems
14
Just hear the voice
In all the songs of the earth
Nothing can come between us
You’re a brother of mine
15
We hold our hands together
Be the sunshine
Nothing can come between us
You’re a sister of time
16
Just hear the voice
Sing all the songs of the earth
Nothing can come between us
Nothing can come between us
Nothing can come between us

17

So give it all the love you have
Never be afraid to show your heart
18

So giving all the love you have
There is a special reason to come true
So giving all the love you have
Never be afraid to show your heart
So giving all the love you have
There is a special reason
There is a special reason this time
19
iii Long Lost Brother Of Mine
(Anderson / Howe / Wakeman / Bruford / Downes)
Long lost brother of mine
Seeing my life for the first time
Long lost brother of mine
Living my life in the dig dream
20
Long lost brother of mine
Walking away from illusion
Long lost brother of mine
Seeing my life for the first time
21
Long lost brother of mine
Seeing me fly like an eagle
Long lost brother of mine
Watching me walk in the full moon
Long lost brother of mine
Seeing my life for the first time
Long lost brother of mine
Walking this dream everlasting
22

So it’s there

Putting one into one special reason
So it’s there
Putting one into one
One another. Sure can. Sure can
23
This is a further dimension
Coming at us for the very first time
It’s the second attention
Realising it all of the time
24
Re-defining this long lost passion
For the living we’re in
This will be the first of many
I be telling you
25
Long lost brother of mine
Walking the dream evolution
Long lost brother of mine
Singing the sisters of freedom
Long lost brother of mine
Seeing the fathers of wisdom
Long lost brother of mine
Seeing my life for the first time
26
So it’s there, but to want it to one special reason
Yes it’s there, but to want it to want one another
So it’s there, but to want it to one special reason
Yes it’s there, you can see what you want to see

Long lost brother of mine

When I first read the song that is sung in the Westminster Abbey Cabaret (p. 66, ll. 4-10), I thought I knew a similar song called “Brother of mine”. Therefore I searched at Google for it. What I found was the song above. However, due to the approximately fourty years between the time the book was written and the time the song was created by Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe (ABWH), it becomes cleat that Aldous Huxley could not have referred to the song. Nevertheless I will do so in this log entery.

Therefore first of all the songtext from the book:

“Bottle of mine, it`s you I`ve always wanted

Bottle of mine, why was I ever decanted?

Skies are blue inside of you,

The weather`s always fine;

For

There ain`t no Bottle in all the world

Like that dear little Bottle of mine”

In reliance to the fact that this song is sung in the Cabaret where the people are to feel happy and take soma, with the word “bottle” is probably meant the drinking of alcohol.

But as I think, it also fits to the Bokanowskify`s Process from the first chapters. Reading it against this background, the parallels to the ABWH song are quite easily to find.

As in the song of ABWH the people in the World State are “Heroes” and “Dreamers” (§2) who dream a future dream as in the song, c.f. “Fourth Dimension Dream” (§11).

The principles of the World State “Community, Identity, Stability” also can be found in the song. For example in the repetition “Nothing can come between us”.

To the Bokanowskify Process also fits the verse “Walking the dream evolution” (§25) and “Putting one into one special reason” (§22) as the Conditioning does.

But now there appear problems with the dream evolution, “ someone told me / There are brothers” (§3). These thinking can also be found in “Bottle of mine”. As we have learned in chapter 4, there are also people in the World State who are critical and rely on history. Interpreted in this way, the question “Bottle of mine, why was I ever decanted?” could also be understood as a critic of the evolution. How could it happen that people no longer born children, but are born in bottles. The verses “Seeing my life for the first time” (§19) and “Walking away from the illusion” (§20) of the song from ABWH are similar to that idea, as well.

“Bottle of mine, it`s you I`ve always wanted”. This verse fits to the term “long lost brother of mine” (§21) of the song. In both cases there is something concerning family life that the people miss.

The verses “skies are blue inside of you/ The weather`s always fine” (Brave New World) draw a line between the song and the chapter. Like in the chapter the atmosphere is mainly created by means of the nature, e.g. “moonlight” etc. This is also the case in the song “Brother of mine”. Here it is also the moon and the sunshine which stand for certain feelings, e.g. “In the full moon” (§11), “Be the sunshine” (§15). The last example could also mean “wake up” or light up” in the sense of make clear to you what a world you have lived in. This idea would also go ahead with my interpretation of “Bottle of mine”.

All in all, I think that against the background of the preceding chapters the song “Bottle of mine” could mean more than just drinking alcohol, but again could keep the wish of having families like in history.

To make clear that this theme is up to date in every time and society and that it is given attention to by every kind of art, I wanted to show you the parallels between “Bottle of mine” and the wuite different piece of writing “Brother of mine”.
